Welcome to the third installment of our “Meet the Preferred Builders” series, where we spotlight the talented builders behind the stunning homes in the Money Hill community. Today, we’re excited to introduce Meier Custom Homes, a fourth-generation family business with deep roots in craftsmanship and client service. Led by James Meier and his son Alex, this builder brings a legacy of quality and personalized care to every project. Read on to discover what sets Meier Custom Homes apart and how they bring dream homes to life.

Can you tell us about your company’s background and how you got started in the building industry?

James Meier of Meir Custom Homes comes from a long line of professional builders.  Initially, he did not see himself in the industry and went to college for a formal education in what he thought was an unrelated field.  He earned degrees in accounting with a focus in management from SLU and received a CPA certification.  Then, in 1990, he founded Meier Custom Homes as a third-generation builder and has never looked back. His son Alex was born soon after. Alex Meier grew up in the business and always had aspirations of partnering in the company.  He worked for several of our sub-contractors and graduated college with a construction-related degree.  Now, Meier Custom Homes, LLC is a fourth-generation business with Alex serving as the Field Superintendent.

How do you ensure the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship in your building projects?

We feel that quality is more than just a buzzword, but an action.  Delivering quality with careful craftsmanship requires more than just a certain construction knowledge and a related skill set.  It requires a conscious decision of the heart to take care of your customer and deliver what is necessary to achieve those high standards. We build each home with that in mind.

What is your company’s process for ensuring client satisfaction from start to finish?

We believe that the building of a custom home is a service. Communication is one of the most important things in a service-oriented field. We are always readily available. Being responsive to your customers isn’t difficult issue if you enjoy what you are doing and you want to please your customers.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in the construction industry, and how have you overcome them?

After COVID, supply chains were an issue.  To manage that, we added Alex’s wife, Ashley to our team as director of client services.  She has a finance degree and has remarkable organizational skills.  She maintains contact with the clients during the building process and helps with selections, ordering, and any other needs the clients may have.  Each member of the team has a specific role and that specialization has enhanced our customer service.

How do you keep up with the latest trends and advancements in building technology and design?

We regularly attend the National Homebuilders Convention to keep up with all of the latest trends and products in the industry. One of our team members always goes to any offered continuing education class. James and Alex are always communicating with inspectors and engineers to expand their knowledge.  Alex likes to say, “A day without learning is a wasted day.”

What advice would you give homeowners or developers looking to build in today’s market?

Don’t wait! Prospective custom home customers should connect and commit to your builder as soon as possible.  We can help things flow smoother for you with valuable input during the design and planning phases that will often lead to more complete and affordable designs.  Our connections with designers, engineers, surveyors, developers, and government entities can make the planning phase much easier and affordable.  These initial consultations and services are done at no cost to you in our effort to earn your business.

How does your company approach collaboration with architects, designers, and other stakeholders in a project?

Collaboration starts with a mutual respect for each person’s position and their ability to contribute to the successfulness of the project.  Having been in the business a long time, we are well versed in multiple aspects of the industry and truly appreciate working with professional architects and designers.

What does being a “preferred builder” mean to you, and how does it shape your relationship with clients and partners?

We are quite honored to have been selected.  We know the vigorous research and due diligence Money Hill went through in approving builders. We feel like we have a stake in Money Hill and its future and we want it to be the best it can be.  We strive to be good neighbors and want to produce a product that will lead to satisfied customers and referrals.  We are not satisfied unless ALL customers become referrals.

What sets your building philosophy apart from others in the industry?

We are different in many ways, but the one that really stands out is we make communication easy. We make sure to be available for our customers. Whether that is in person or a phone call. We find that if the lines of communication stay open then it makes the building process easier and a lot more enjoyable.

Can you share a recent project that highlights your company’s unique approach or expertise?

There are so many projects that stand out, but one recent custom home experience that was pretty unique and reflects our commitment to communication and transparency comes to mind. We contracted with a customer to build a very detailed custom home at a distance.  The customer was living in Idaho and we were only able to physically meet with them twice during the whole build.  All communication was done through phone, email, and Facetime. The house was completed in a very timely manner and the customer still raves nearly 2 years later about how much they love the home and how great the process was.

With a strong family foundation, and a passion for quality, Meier Custom Homes exemplifies the excellence Money Hill seeks in a preferred builder. James, Alex, and their team continue to raise the bar for custom homebuilding. Learn more about our preferred builders and how they can bring your vision to life here.
